History of Thamna.

The original name of Thamna was Stambhnak or Stambhanpur. The idol of Stambhnak Parshwanath even today is present in Khambhat. Thamna influenced by The Power of Jain dominance preceptor ruled nearby villages for many years which is denoted by Shri Dhumketu, the preceptor of Stambhnak, in his book “Karnavati”. In 1131 Abhaysuri referenced Thamna. At Girnar mountan where there is the tempel of Neminath there are 6 inscriptions on a stone which are of Samvat 1288, Falgun Shukla 10 Wednesday where there is a reference of Stambhnakpur and Stambhtirth. In the same inscription Parshwanath Temple was built by Vastupal is denoted. In ancient Jain article Acharya Shri Muni Jin Vijayji wrote that Stambhnakpur is located nearby Umreth, Taluka Anand, Distr. Kheda which is on the bank of river Shedhi, known as Thamna which was pronounced as Thambhana and an alternative of original Thambhanya. Abhaydev Suri had taken out the statue of Parshwanth covered under the surface of palash tree. It is referred in Merutung that in samvat 1368 Parshwanath from Stambhanpur Thamna was transferred to Stambhtirth Khambhat.

After the Jain possession Thamna came into the hands of Khedawar Brahmins. Gangadattji Maheshwarji Dave from Thamna was one of the leading businessmen of the world in the Middle Ages. He found diamond mines in Pannanagar from which he build a range of mansions in Sagar and Thamna. You can see the remaining of it even today. Daveji was the financer of Peshwa. In the year 1937 after receiving Provincial Independence Congress lead by Balgangadhar Kher, in Mumbai state, who was the Education Minister, introduced Vardha Educational system and to introduce it practically he selected Thamna as the centre place under the guidance of Shri Babalbhai Mehta in 1935. Outside Thamna a piece of 10-12 vigha village owned land known as wadiyu Patidar’s of the village, was donated for Vardha Education. On Sunday 21.9.1938 by the lotus hands of Shri Ravishankar Maharaj Vardha Education was first introduced here. First stone laying ceremony, for the new school building was held, made by the Babasaheb and the opening ceremony was done with the pious hands of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. At the opening speech he said that this village is like a heaven, like a garden and blessed that our children will blossom like flowers and will become respectable citizens. The work nobody dares to start you all have commenced.

To look after the entire experiment Babalbhai transferred his residence from Masra to Thamna forever. To give suggestions and advise lemends like Kakasaheb Kalelkar, Shri Narharibhai Parikh, Acharya Kriplani, Shri Mahadevbhai Desai, Shri Kanaiyalal Munshi, Shri Kishorilal Mashruwala, Acharya Bhagwat Desaibhai, Nathabhai Patel, Shri Vithaldas J.Rajani, Chimanbhai Mehta, Jugatram Dave, Nanabhai Bhatt, Dilkhushbhai Diwanji, Jyotindra Mehta, Lalbhai R.Desai, Premal Maharaj, Shivabhai G.Patel, Indumati Sheth, Sarladevi Sarabhai, Kusumben Patel, Mamasaheb Fadke, Haripriyaben Shardi, Dr. Jivraj Mehta, Chimanbhai Patel (Chief Minister Guj.) and many others came to Thamna. Teachers of the school Shri Dahyabhai Pathak, Shri Jorabhai, Shri Aditbhai etc successfully advanced the Vardha Education Programme. Because of beginning of the 1942 fight Government took the Vardha Education Programme in their hands and made it fruitless.

Batch of 20 persons from Thamna took part in Lasundra Mitha satyagrah and batch of 6 took part in Dharasana Satyagrah. Entire village joined to No Tax Fight and for a period of one and half month people of Thamna took shelter outside village boundry.Government became the sole proprietor of 75 vigha land of Thamna. Police Patel (Mukhi) Narsinhbhai Shankarbhai Patel and others gave their resignations. 6 man and 1 woman break the law modestly and went to jail. By taking personal part in the Satyagrah Chhotabhai Shankarbhai Patel (Mukhi) was sentenced for six months.

In 1942 Karenge Ya Marenge war Narsinhbhai Mukhi resigned again. People of the village boycotted the officers. Mukhi from Thamna Vanta Prabhatsinh Gohel also resigned. There was a big procession in Umreth to protest the arrest of Babalbhai. At that time, during the clash between police many get injured and three people more from Thamna were arrested. 19 people from village sentenced for six six months. After independence near the panchayat house a list of all those krantivir was put up and set up on the stup.

In memory of Mahatma Gandhi, in the compound of Vaheraai Mata near bus-stand Gandhi-stup is build. After independence , for Babalbhai, entire Gujarat became the work place. Openning of Mahatma Gandhi Smarak Dawakhana & Kasturba Gandhi Smarak Prasutigruh was done with the hands of Shri Morarjibhai Desai, Finance Minister of India. Kasturba Gandhi, Governor of Gujarat Shri Vishwanathan, Governor of Talimnadu Shri Prabhudas Patwari and many other great people visited Thamna. Governor of Gujarat Shri Shrimannarayan accompanied with his wife Madalsaben reside for two days at Babalbhai residence, Rambag, Thamna.

During Sarvodaya Mela 1962 & Gujarat Sarvodaya Sammelan 1982 more than 700 sarvodaya workers, public servants, social workers and respected persons reside two days in Thamna. Pu. Ravishankar Dada had homely relations with our village. He was visiting our village very often. When Chhotalal Anupram Vyas from Umrreth, was president of Kheda Jilla Local Board, with his cooperation a bridge over River Shedhi was built and also road between Umreth-Thamna was constructed. While digging on the west side fields of the village people getting foundations of buildings, pieces of copper and other metals which denotes that the area of the village was big and many Kansara (copper-smith) families were living here.

Kuldevi of Kansara Tribe Thamni Mataji is on the west of the village. Many people used to come here for their offerings.

Babalbhai reside here for 44 years and made this village his residence and karmabhumi. Because of his deeds and literary work Thamna became famous as Babalbhai’s Thamna in entire Gujarat. Hardly there will be a house where there is no one or two graduates. Many from the village reach to high positions as Doctors, Engineers, Scientists, Educationalists, Teachers, Principals and Government Officers. People who resides in foreign countries spread the fragrance of Thamna by their deeds.

Shri Chhaganbhai Mundasbhai leave for Zanzibar (Africa) in 1918 where he was a Head Master in school. In 1922 he became Education Inspector and afterwards he became Principal of Research Training college. All his four sons acquired higher education. In those days his two daughters Shushilaben & Kamlaben became M.B.B.S. and later F.R.C.S.. Dr. Ranchhodbhai Madhabhai Patel became B.Sc. (Agri) in the year 1934. In 1951 he became M.Sc. from Visconsin University of America and in 1953 he achieved Phd. Degree. He served as Principal Campus Director of Anand Agriculture College and Sub-Registrar of Sardar Patel University. Dr. Dahyabhai Muljibhai Patel became B.Sc.Tech. in 1939 and in 1946 he became Phd. from Mumbai University in Textile Chemistry. He received six merit scholarships. In 1952 he travelled to Switzerland, France, Germany and England for the purpose of Higher Study. Dr. Chimanbhai Jivabhai Patel became M.B.B.S. and served in foreign countries. He donated rupees one Lack to construct a hall in Thamna.

Dr. Naginbhai Somabhai Sheth was M.Sc. Phd. He worked as advisor in many National Institutions. His contribution to commence Sardar Patel Museum is unforgettable. He went to jail during Independence Movement.

Shri Bhailalbhai Muljibhai Patel M.Sc. studied and experienced in foreign countries started a Laboratory Furnishers business in Mumbai. He provides equipments to Indian Government Laboratories. Dhoribhai Talsibhai Patel was a leading unselfish person in the village. He always stood first in all public works for the village. He used to keep people from village with him in every work.

Shri Aditybhai Shankarbhai Patel (master) was a teacher in Primary School. To bring success to Vardha Education he worked together with Babalbhai. He was Khadidhari (wearing Khadi). He was wearing cloths from self spinned cotton. Once the vividh karyakari Sahkari Mandli was closed he worked hard and restarted it. He played a big role to have Kelvani Mandal.

Shri Chhotabhai Shankarbhai patel ( Mukhi ) was active in independence movement and was jailed for. He was a member of Kheda JIlla Local Board. When Gram Panchayat started he worked successfully as first Sarpanch.

Following persons took active part in Independence Movement and suffered jail from whom besides 2-3 persons nobody accepted Independence Movement Pension. Neither they travelled free though they were entitled:
